January 2010

It is snowing as I'm writing this, with more predicted for tomorrow. This is how we like to start the new year! Allen and I went out on our snowshoes yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed the exercise. The woods are so peaceful.

If you've made a New Year's resolution to get more exercise, snowshoes are a great way to do it. You can use some of the same trails we hike in the summer, and get  great views as your reward. One of our favorites is Mt Crag, just over the state line into NH. An hour of gentle uphill climbing brings you a view of the Presidentials and the Androscoggin River flowing eastward below your perch on the rocky crest. We like to bring along some hot chocolate to enjoy before heading home again.

Bethel will be humming with activity during our Winterfest week, January 23-31. There will be snow sculptures to admire, ice skating, demonstrations of snow sports and equipment, hot air balloons, and more! Many activities are free, and our weekday special (3 nights for $249) applies during this week, so come and play in the snow with us!

Thought for the month:

Every man should be born again on the first day of January.  Start with a fresh page.  Take up one hole more in the buckle if necessary, or let down one, according to circumstances; but on the first of January let every man gird himself once more, with his face to the front...  ~Henry Ward Beecher
